Metal painting is a specialized type of painting. It requires different techniques than other surfaces, like drywall, wood and other more porous materials. That's why it's important to hire a professional who is knowledgeable and experienced in painting metal.
Prepping the Metal Surface Is the Key to Success
Preparation is critical when painting metal to ensure the quality and longevity of the finish. Without proper prep, the project will surely fail. ACP has successfully painted metal surfaces for hundreds of customers since we’ve been in business. We strictly follow proper prep techniques so that the outcome is perfect.
- Clean the surface. We use the appropriate products to remove any built-up grease and grime. If the surface has a glossy finish, we will sand it and wash it down.
- Remove loose paint and rust. Depending on the extent and severity, we use a grinder, or remove it by hand using a sander, scraper or wire brush. In extreme cases it is necessary to sand blast the surface to remove all paint and rust.
- Prime. Last, but far from least, we apply industrial grade metal primer, specifically made for the type of metal to be painted. Priming seals the metal from any moisture that will result in the paint not properly adhering. It’s very important to prime the metal surface immediately after cleaning it or else dust and dirt will begin to form.
Once the primer is completely dry and cured, the painting process can begin. We apply the paint by airless spray using low pressure tips. The paint we use is industrial grade water-based alkyd urethane enamel paint. This paint is ideal for metal structures that get a lot of use and are exposed to the elements. It is extremely durable, yet aesthetically pleasing. It also meets the most stringent VOC regulations.

Arizona uses metal for many of their commercial fences, bridges, and other structures because metal performs much better than other materials in the excessive dry heat.
