Cabinet Painting

Cabinets can be made from several different materials, like plywood, particle board, and solid wood, or a combination thereof. There are several steps in the preparation and painting process. Neglecting any of them can produce unsatisfactory results.

• Protect surfaces from paint splatters. Remove any items that are non-stationary to another location. Cover stationary items, countertops and floors.
• Remove all hinges, knobs, and drawer pulls. This eliminates the tedious task of taping them off to avoid getting paint on them.
• Take off the cabinet doors and place them on a flat surface.
• Clean the surface to rid it of grease or grime with a heavy-duty cleaner.
• Sand down any rough spots or imperfections.
• Fill holes and grooves to smooth out the surface, then sand again.
• Wipe the surface to remove any dust from the sanding process.
• Prime the surface. Depending on the type of cabinet construction, you may need more than one coat.
• Paint the frames and drawers of the cabinets.
• Paint one side of each door.
• Let the paint fully dry and repeat with a second coat.
• Wait some more and follow up with a topcoat.
• Wait even longer for the topcoat to dry.
• Paint the other side of the cabinet doors.
• Repeat steps 11 through 13.
• Hang up the cabinet doors and reinstall the hardware.
• Remove protective coverings and clean up.
