The People Behind ACP

Russ Byers

President & Co-Owner, ACP Painting

Russ Byers co-founded ACP Painting in 2005 with his brother Rob. Both are U.S. Army veterans. The company is headquartered in Maricopa, Arizona, with additional locations in Scottsdale and Casa Grande, serving residential and commercial clients throughout the Phoenix Valley and surrounding communities.

As president and sales manager, Russ leads a team of three to four sales consultants and ACP’s business development representative, and much of his focus goes to long-term strategic planning and the overall direction of the company. He also fills the gaps between ACP’s other key management roles, stepping in wherever he’s needed to keep departments aligned, solve problems, and keep the company moving in the right direction as it grows.

“For many years, it has seemed to me that craftsmanship is becoming a lost art,” Russ says. “Rob and I have always put a lot of emphasis on paying attention to the details and making sure a job is done correctly, not just done. That has been important to us from the beginning, and I think the feedback we’ve received from customers over the years reflects that.”

He puts the same weight on professionalism and respect for people’s time. “If we schedule an estimate, we should show up when we say we will. If we promise to send something, we should send it. If we give a customer a start date, they should be able to plan around it,” he says. “Things don’t always go exactly according to plan in construction, but when something changes, our responsibility is to communicate it before the customer has to ask. To me, doing good work includes both the finished product and the experience we provide along the way.”

Russ’s Christian faith is central to who he is and shapes the way he approaches his family, leadership, decision-making, and service to others. While ACP Painting is not a faith-based company, the principles Russ brings to his role are deeply influenced by his belief that people should be treated with honesty, integrity, and a genuine desire to serve.

That philosophy is reflected in ACP’s three core values: Accountability, Communication, and Purpose. Accountability means honoring commitments and delivering them with integrity. Communication means speaking truthfully, listening fully, and setting clear expectations so there are no surprises. Purpose means working with the intention to serve people well. Together, those values set the standard Russ and Rob expect throughout the company.

Russ served in the U.S. Army from 1998 to 2002 and reached the rank of Specialist. After Basic Training at Fort Benning, Georgia, and Advanced Individual Training at Fort Gordon, Georgia, he was stationed in Darmstadt, Germany, as a network switching systems operator-maintainer (MOS 31F). He calls those four years one of the most formative periods of his early adult life, with a lasting influence on how he approaches responsibility, teamwork, leadership, and accountability.

After the Army, Russ went to work with Rob at Byers Home Maintenance in Las Vegas, taking on everything from everyday repairs to small remodeling projects and light additions. That work gave the brothers a broad understanding of residential construction and laid the groundwork for ACP Painting. Russ also attended community college and trained in emergency services, earning an EMT certificate and Firefighter I and II certifications, and he briefly worked as a firefighter. His career went in a different direction, but that training reinforced the value of preparation, teamwork, and staying calm when things don’t go according to plan.

After more than two decades of painting in the Sonoran Desert, Russ has also become particular about what it takes to produce work that lasts in Arizona’s demanding climate. During summer exterior projects, surface temperature, not simply air temperature, governs when and how coatings are applied. Paint and caulk must stay within manufacturer-approved application temperatures, which shapes the workday during the hottest months. Crews often start between 5 and 6 in the morning and finish before the worst afternoon heat. Just as importantly, team members are trained to watch for signs of heat-related illness, with water and electrolyte replacement readily available throughout the summer.

Russ is a regular guest on Rosie on the House, where ACP has been a Certified Partner since 2024, helping Arizona homeowners better understand preparation, coatings, weather considerations, and what they should expect from a professional painting contractor.

Service to the community is equally important to Russ. As a veteran, he remains closely connected to the veteran community. ACP sponsors the annual Veterans Memorial Day 5K at Copper Sky Park, which has contributed more than $10,000 over five years to local veteran organizations in Maricopa.

ACP also participates annually in the Chandler Backpack Drive, providing more than 20 fully stocked backpacks to local youth in need; supports numerous local sports teams; participates in community cleanup days and food bank efforts; and has completed multiple Paint It Forward projects. Through Paint It Forward, the ACP team has donated painting services to women affected by domestic violence and to individuals and families facing difficult circumstances who simply needed a helping hand.

That commitment to service is personal for Russ, too. Through his church, he participates in Christian mission trips that include building homes for people in need and sharing his faith with those who are hurting, struggling, or without hope.

In 2020, when local high schools canceled traditional graduation celebrations, ACP provided professional photo sessions for five graduating seniors so they and their families could still commemorate the milestone. “This was a small thing for us to do, but it had such a big impact on these kids,” Russ said at the time.

ACP has maintained BBB accreditation and an A+ rating since 2015, operates under Arizona ROC license 294240, and has earned an average rating of 4.9 stars across nearly 650 customer reviews. In 2020, the Ahwatukee Foothills News named ACP Painting its Painter of the Year.
